In this article, Deca Durabolin, a Nandrolone ester, will be referred to as Deca.

Dose:

This steroid is not recommended for women due to virilization (becoming too masculine), however some females have been known to take doses of 25-50mg per week. For men, a dose of between 50-200mg per week is a wise place to start. Injections can be done once a week or even once every two weeks because of Deca’s long half-life. Men have different tolerances to this. Most body builders will find they never need more than 400mg per week. Always be safe with these substances. More is not better. Your body only has so many receptors and taking more than 600mg per week can be extremely harmful to your health or even lethal. Cycle length can be anywhere from 3-12 weeks. I am always a fan of short cycles so your body can come back to equilibrium quickly, aka quick recovery time.

Who Should and Who Shouldn’t Use Deca

Should Use:

Experienced body builders who want explosive gains and have done their research and know what they are getting into.

Should Not Use:

>For those running a first cycle it is recommended not to start with Deca. Deca must be taken in combination with test, an aromatase inhibitor, possibly cabergoline and then followed up with an extensive post cycle. It is better to take other anabolic steroids first so you will be more familiar to how your body reacts to anabolic supplements.

>Those who are planning to have children should also avoid Deca. While most things go back to normal after a proper Deca cycle, there is a high risk of sperm count never going back to pervious levels, which can lead to fertility issues. If having children is a big priority for you, try other steroids, not Deca.

>!!!Athletes who will be tested for doping absolutely should not use Deca. Deca stays in your system longer than almost any steroid out there. It may show up on a doping test a year and a half after it’s taken. Try using steroids such as Anavar and Dianabol if you are an athlete, those can be out of your system in a matter of weeks, don’t involve needles, and are great for gaining extra strength.

What about “Deca Dick”?

Deca Dick is completely avoidable if you follow the rules for properly taking a Deca cycle.

Running Deca with Minimal Side Effects:

#1: Never take Deca alone.
The Reason: When taking Deca, your body temporarily quits making testosterone. Testosterone breaks down into DHT, and DHT is the hormone that makes your dick work. So, no testosterone = no DHT = no erections. The way to fix this is to take some injectable testosterone with your Deca cycle. You will need about 200mg per week to keep you sex drive normal. Testosterone ethanoate or testosterone cypionate are both good choices.
An alternative option to talking Deca with testosterone is taking Deca with mesterolone (brand name Proviron). Mesterolone is a unique steroid that increases sperm count, reduces estrogen, and increases DHT and libido. Mesterolone does not convert into estrogen like testosterone does, so taking mesterolone as opposed to testosterone could prevent having to take any kind of aromatase inhibitor.
Both mesterolone and testosterone provide DHT which keep your sex drive intact and prevent the so dreaded Deca Dick.

#2: Add in a small dose of Cabergoline/Dostinex, about .25mg 2x per week.
The Reason: Besides stopping your testosterone production, Deca also raises prolactin levels. This can also hamper sex drive and cause some gynocomastia. Cabergoline is very effective at lowering prolactin thus increasing sex drive and minimizing prolactin based side effects such as gynecomastia. Cabeergoline is a dopamine agonist, so it acts like a dopamine in your body, which causes a sense of wellbeing and can even curve appetite. The problem with Cabergoline/Dostinex is that when you get off of it, it may cause a mild depression. But this in combination with testosterone or mesterolone should ensure a strong to normal sex drive while on your Deca cycle.

#3: A post cycle is a must when finishing a Deca cycle.
The Reason: Post cycles help your body to get its hormone levels back where they need to be. Comid is a good choice here. Clomid will stimulate your testosterone and block excess estrogen, while still allowing your body to produce some estrogen, which is necessary.
Start your post cycle two weeks after your last injection. Begin with a higher dose of Clomid, 100mg for two weeks, then the following two week decrease the dose to 50mg.

Other Things to Take Note Of:

>You may or may not need an aromatase inhibitor such as Arimadex. It’s good to have one handy just in case you start to see any signs of gynecomastia popping up. Deca does convert to estrogen, but at a very slow rate. And if you are not prone to gynecomastia, then you may not have any symptoms of this. If you do get symptoms, a small dose of Arimadex will likely take care of it. Or, if you are running Deca with mesterolone, the mesterolone may reduce estrogen enough to take care of any unwanted side effects.

>Deca is a progestin, so you may want to consider bioidentical progesterone. Progestins should not be confused with progesterone. Progestins looks like progesterone to the body so they can fit into progesterone receptors in the body and progestins in high doses can cause the body to stop producing progesterone. Progesterone is an important hormone that is highly misunderstood in the bodybuilding and bro science community. Progesterone counteracts the effects of estrogen. When one takes a progestin-like steroid, the gyno that results is not from increased progesterone, but rather from a progesterone deficiency because your body stops producing its own progesterone and/or the progestins are blocking the progesterone receptors in your cells. A small dose of bioidentical progesterone during a cycle may stave off gynecomastia. Progesterone is also known to ward off irritability. Progesterone can also be taken alone when not on a cycle.

>Deca can make you sterile. While on Deca, your sperm count will decrease and it should go back to normal once you get off of Deca, but it may not. In some cases sperm count never goes back to the levels it was before Deca. This isn’t a concern if you are not planning to have children. However, if you are planning to have children, it is recommended that you should try another steroid. Mesterolone (aka Proviron), for example, is a steroid that actually increases sperm count and is used as a fertility drug for men.

Deca is rarely prescribed by doctors today, but it has been used to treat anemia, osteoporosis, breast cancer and to increase collagen synthesis.
